Boy Proof by Cecil Castellucci
Victoria Jurgen is boy proof. By renaming herself Egg and shaving her head so that she looks exactly like her favorite science fiction heroine, Egg has cut herself completely off from having any sort of relationship – friendship or otherwise. But when new kid Max Carter arrives at her high school, Egg meets someone like her. Someone different. And unlike the other students, Max isn’t put off by Egg’s boy proofing. Is it possible that could Egg have a friend (or maybe something more)?
Castellucci’s debut novel is simply amazing. In Egg/Victoria the author has created a unique and complex character that other authors would have toned down or shied away from. This novel does a great job of reminding readers that there is no such thing as a “typical” teenage girl. And by refusing to be common, Egg will appeal to many readers for being just like them: uncommon. I highly recommend Boy Proof to all YA readers, particularly those who have considered themselves different at some point in their life.
